Garden Fireplace or Fire Pit? A Buying Guide with Prices

Who is a fire pit for?

For anyone who wants a fire at the centre of a garden or terrace seating area. A fire pit sits low and people sit around it; it is more about atmosphere than heating, and its warmth reaches the immediate surroundings. The XL version is meant for larger seating groups and hotel or restaurant terraces. Use it only in the open air on a heat-resistant surface; never under an awning, a pergola cover or a balcony ceiling.

Who is an outdoor pellet heater or decorative pellet stove for?

For café terraces and gardens that want to extend seating time. Diamond Z, with its three-legged vertical body and reflector on top, resembles a patio heater; it has a Ø100 mm flue, is lit by hand and needs no electricity. In Davul and Sandık the flame shows in a glass chamber; the manufacturer's photos show terrace and garden use. None of the three has a published heat output, so for now we give no figure for "how large an area it warms".

Is the centre fireplace for the garden or the living room?

The Centre Fireplace is a freestanding fireplace visible from four sides with a flue running up to the ceiling. Installing it is a project: the flue route through ceiling and roof, roof insulation and floor protection are planned in advance and fitted by a qualified team. What does it depend on?

• Surface: On wooden decking or artificial grass a heat-resistant base is needed.
• Wind and placement: Secure it against tipping on a windy terrace; place it where smoke will not drift into neighbours' windows.
• Distance: Keep children and pets at a safe distance; keep cushions, umbrellas and plants away.
• Fuel: Store pellets dry; if burning wood, dry wood reduces sparks and smoke: which wood.
• Putting it out: Extinguish embers fully after use and never leave the fire unattended.

Safety note

No stove is "smokeless"; pellets, wood and coal all produce smoke and carbon monoxide as they burn. A flue of the right diameter that draws properly and leak-tight pipe joints are therefore essential; even outdoors, an enclosed veranda, an awning or a glazed winter garden can let carbon monoxide build up. Use a carbon monoxide detector at home; with headache, dizziness or nausea, air the room, get outside and call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.
