Can You Have a Pellet Stove Without a Chimney? Flue Facts

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: no, there is no such thing as a chimney-free pellet stove. Manufacturer manuals set limits such as a Ø80 mm smoke outlet, at least 1.5 m of vertical rise, at most 3 changes of direction and a horizontal section of no more than 4 m with at least a 3% upward slope.

A manufacturer guide written to the Italian installation standard UNI 10683 answers "can it be installed without a chimney" with a plain "no". Products described as "chimney-free" either run through a short pipe out of the wall (which is also a flue and follows the same rules) or are not pellet stoves at all.

What should a pellet stove flue look like? In numbers

Pellet stove flue: rule, typical value (mm, m, Pa) and basis
RuleTypical valueBasis
Pipe diameterØ80 mm (small and medium outputs), Ø100 mm on some large modelsManufacturer installation manual
Minimum vertical rise1.5 m (Ø80), 2 m (Ø100)Manufacturer installation manual
Changes of direction (bends)At most 3, each 90° or less; the T-piece at the outlet does not countManufacturer installation manual
Horizontal sectionAt most 4 m, sloping upwards by at least 3% (≈3°)Manufacturer manual; UNI 10683 guide
Shared flueProhibited: each appliance needs its own flueUNI 10683 guide
Cleaning and condensationCapped T-piece at the outlet, accessible inspection openingManufacturer installation manual

These are typical limits taken from one manufacturer's manual; if your own stove's manual says otherwise, that applies. In Turkey the building regulations, the apartment management and municipal rules also govern the flue.

Flue diameters the manufacturer gives for models on our site: manual (natural-draught) models 130 mm, automatic models 80 mm, the camping stove 100 mm. The table is generated from the product records:

Why is a chimney essential, even with a fan?

  • The exhaust fan does not "create" draught, it only assists it. A pellet stove pushes the smoke with a fan; that allows short horizontal sections, but it still needs a vertical path to carry the smoke safely outside.
  • When the power goes off, the fan stops. At that moment only the natural draught of the chimney carries away the smoke from the pellets still burning in the pot; that is the reason behind the vertical-rise requirement. In a "pipe through the wall" installation without a vertical section the smoke can spill back into the room. Details: what happens to a pellet stove in a power cut.
  • Flue gas is not just water vapour. A pellet stove produces little smoke but it is not "smokeless"; the flue gas contains carbon monoxide, fine particles and volatile compounds (EU limits allow 300 mg/m³ of CO and 20 mg/m³ of particulates even for pellet stoves). That gas belongs above the roof, not in the room or at the neighbour's window.
  • Condensation and creosote. In a cold, uninsulated, long horizontal pipe the flue gas condenses; the acidic water corrodes the pipe, soot builds up and draught drops. A flue rising up the outside wall must be twin-wall and insulated.

What is sold as a "chimney-free pellet stove"?

Three things go by this name. First, an installation with a short pipe passing through the wall: this is a "wall flue", and the rules on vertical rise, number of bends and distance from windows still apply. Second, electric or bioethanol heaters that look like fireplaces: they do not burn pellets. Third, products advertised as chimney-free whose manual nevertheless requires a flue: read the manual, not the advert. The manufacturer guide regards a pellet stove operated without connection to a chimney as non-compliant and harmful to health.

What does it depend on?

  • Is there an existing chimney? If an old coal chimney is to be used, a stainless steel liner must be drawn through it and the chimney must serve this stove alone.
  • How many bends? Every 90° bend reduces draught, which is why manuals limit their number. Prefer 45° bends where possible.
  • Fresh air intake: An outside air duct is recommended for many models; in airtight, insulated homes it becomes a must.
  • Cleaning: The flue must be cleaned at least once a year; for how and why, see chimney cleaning and stove maintenance and pellet stove maintenance.

Safety

A pellet stove without a flue, or with a faulty one, is among the main causes of carbon monoxide poisoning. Use a carbon monoxide detector at home; with symptoms such as headache, nausea or dizziness get into fresh air and call 112. Symptoms and the 10-point checklist: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.

For choosing a stove, see our stoves page; the right fuel matters as much as the right flue for draught and a clean glass: 6 mm pine pellets with the ENplus A1 logo.

Note: the 80 mm rule applies to automatic (auger-fed) pellet stoves. Natural-draught manual pellet stoves have a wider flue outlet; for the Baba's Stove Eco series, for example, the manufacturer's data sheet gives 130 mm. On these stoves the pipe diameter must match the outlet: stove base and stove pipe guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a pellet stove without a chimney?

There is no stove that burns pellets and works without a flue. Installations with a short pipe out through the wall also count as a flue and must meet the vertical-rise, bend and clearance rules.

What diameter should a pellet stove flue be?

80 mm (8 cm) on most domestic models; 100 mm on some large ones. The stove's manual sets the diameter; narrowing it spoils the draught.

How many metres should a pellet stove flue be?

The vertical section at least 1.5 m (Ø80 mm); the horizontal section at most 4 m and sloping upwards. The upper limit on total length depends on the number of bends and is given in the manual.

Can a pellet stove be flued onto a balcony or through a window?

An installation that discharges smoke through a window or into a balcony space breaks the rules; the smoke must be carried to roof level. Ask an installer about an insulated flue rising up the outside wall.

Why is my pellet stove flue smoking?

Usually a draught problem: too many bends, a long horizontal section, a dirty pipe or a blocked T-piece. For the other causes, see pellet stove smoking or giving an ignition error.
