What Is a Wood and Pellet (Hybrid) Stove? Pros, Limits and Models

Short answer: a hybrid stove is a hand-filled stove that can burn both pellets and wood in the same firebox; most need no electricity. The two Natural Stove models listed as hybrids on our site are Gonca at 16,200 TL and the horizontal cooker Diamond at 45,000 TL.

The manual Baba's Stove range also burns pellets, wood and briquettes according to the data sheet: from the 8 kW Eco 8 at 37,750 TL to the 10 kW Saphire cooker at 60,200 TL (VAT included, 20 October 2026). Note: the Natural 20h–60h cast-iron models burn wood and coal, not pellets.

Which model burns which fuel?

The distinction matters: "hybrid" is sometimes used for pellets plus wood and sometimes for wood plus coal. On our site the hybrid subtype is given only to models that can burn pellets and wood. Automatically fed pellet stoves (Gold E 12, Hidro A and D) burn pellets only; never put wood in them.

What are the advantages of a hybrid stove?

• Fuel flexibility: When pellets are hard to find or expensive, you can switch to wood.
• Works without electricity: Manual hybrids burn on natural draught and keep heating during a power cut.
• Cooking: Diamond, Gold and Saphire have an oven; per the Saphire data sheet the oven is 36.5 × 36.5 × 30 cm inside.

What are the limits of a hybrid stove?

• Hands-on use: No thermostat or automatic ignition; you light the fire and set the air.
• Log length: The firebox is small; the Saphire sheet gives 35 × 33 × 37 cm, so logs must be cut short.
• Ash and soot: Burning wood means more ash and soot on the glass; dry wood is essential: oak, beech or pine: which wood.
• Mixed burning: Burn pellets and wood separately; do not mix the two fuels at once.

What does it depend on?

• Which fuel is easy for you to get? If you will burn mostly pellets, work out consumption with how many kilos a pellet stove burns per day and cost with pellet stove or coal stove.
• Area to heat: Find your kW need with the stove sizing calculator; with average insulation 1 kW ≈ 9–11 m².
• Flue: Any wood-burning stove needs a conventional flue that draws well; the manual Baba's models have a 130 mm outlet: flue rules.

Safety note

No stove is "smokeless"; pellets, wood and coal all produce smoke and carbon monoxide as they burn. A flue of the right diameter that draws properly and leak-tight pipe joints are therefore essential. Use a carbon monoxide detector at home; with headache, dizziness or nausea, air the room, get outside and call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.
