Pellet Stove Electricity Consumption: How Many Watts, and What Happens in a Power Cut?
Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:
Short answer: a pellet stove draws 300–800 W during ignition and 50–300 W while running; by one manufacturer's estimate it uses 1–2 kWh of electricity a day and 30–60 kWh a month. In a power cut the auger, fans and control board stop and the stove goes out; the real risk is smoke spilling back into the room the moment the fan stops. That is why an installation with a vertical flue is essential, while a UPS is an option.
How many watts, for how long?
| State | Power drawn | Duration | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ignition (igniter + fans) | 300–800 W | About 5–10 minutes, each start | Manufacturer (Ecoforest) |
| Continuous running (auger, exhaust fan, room fan) | 50–125 W | Throughout the burn | Energy supplier table (ENGIE) |
| Continuous running, large and ducted models | 100–300 W | Throughout the burn | Manufacturer (Ecoforest) |
| Daily total | 1–2 kWh | Typical use | Manufacturer (Ecoforest) |
| Monthly total | 30–60 kWh | Typical use | Manufacturer (Ecoforest) |
To do the sum yourself: ignition 500 W × 10 minutes ≈ 0.08 kWh; two starts a day ≈ 0.17 kWh. Running 100 W × 10 hours = 1 kWh. Total about 1.2 kWh a day. For the monthly electricity cost multiply those kWh by your own tariff. For comparison: a pellet stove's electricity use is around one to two percent of the heat it produces; 100–200 W of electricity for 10 kW of heat.
What happens in a power cut?
- The stove goes out. The auger stops feeding pellets and the pellets in the pot burn out within a few minutes. When power returns, most models do not relight by themselves for safety reasons, or relight only after a cleaning cycle; your manual will say.
- The exhaust fan stops. At that moment only the chimney's natural draught carries the smoke from the pellets still burning in the pot. A flue with a vertical rise (at least 1.5 m for Ø80 mm in manufacturer manuals) is essential for this reason; with a pipe running straight out through the wall the smoke can return to the room: can you have a pellet stove without a chimney.
- The room fan stops. The body heats up a little further; on some models the overheat thermostat trips and an error code appears. When power returns you may need to reset the code as described in the manual.
- Carbon monoxide risk: If you smell smoke in the room at the moment of the cut, open a window and leave the room; with symptoms, call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors. A battery detector keeps working in a power cut; if yours is mains-powered, make sure it has battery backup.
Is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) worth it?
Yes, but know its limits. The aim is not to run the stove for hours in a cut, but to let the exhaust fan clear the smoke so the stove shuts down in a controlled way or rides through a short cut. If the stove's running draw is 100–150 W, one hour needs 100–150 Wh; the energy drawn from the battery is a little more because of conversion losses. It must also handle the 300–800 W of ignition; for the motors and control board manufacturers mostly require a pure sine wave UPS. The EPA notes that backup batteries are sold with some models.
Is there a non-electric pellet stove?
There is, but they are rare. The EPA notes that some pellet stoves use gravity instead of electricity to feed the burn pot; these models have no fan or thermostat, the air is adjusted by hand, and their comfort and automation fall short of an ordinary pellet stove. They are not common in Turkey; when buying one the flue must be installed to work entirely on natural draught. If simple heating without electricity is the main aim, a cast-iron stove burning wood or coal is the more usual choice: range cooker, cast-iron fireplace stove or pellet stove.
What does it depend on?
- Number of starts: If the thermostat setting causes frequent stop-starts, the igniter runs many times a day; if a "modulation" mode (lowering the setting and continuing to burn) exists, prefer it.
- Maintenance: A clogged burn pot prolongs ignition and the igniter runs longer; see pellet stove maintenance.
- Pellets: Damp pellets light late and cause ignition errors; for certified pellets, see how to recognise ENplus A1 pellets.
Stove options are on the stoves page; for an easy-lighting, low-moisture fuel, 6 mm pine pellets with the ENplus A1 logo.

An example of a pellet stove without electricity: according to the manufacturer's data sheet Baba's Stove Eco 8 works on natural draught and needs no electricity; on the Eco Fan 8 electricity is only for the fan (220 V / 80 W). Comparison: which 8 kW pellet stove to buy.

Frequently asked questions
How many watts of electricity does a pellet stove use?
300–800 W during ignition (5–10 minutes), 50–300 W while running; around 100 W on most small and medium models.
How much electricity does a pellet stove use per month?
By the manufacturer's estimate 30–60 kWh a month; with one or two starts a day and 10 hours of running, about 36 kWh. Multiply by your tariff for the cost.
Does a pellet stove go out in a power cut?
Yes; the auger stops, the pellets in the pot burn out and the stove goes out. The risk is smoke returning to the room the moment the fan stops; that is why a vertical flue and a detector matter.
How many VA should a UPS for a pellet stove be?
A pure sine wave UPS that handles the maximum power on the stove's label (mostly 300–800 W for ignition); 100–150 Wh of usable battery energy for one hour of running. For the exact value consult the manual and the UPS manufacturer.
Is there a pellet stove that works without electricity?
Gravity-fed, fanless models exist (the EPA mentions them) but they are not common in Turkey and lack the comfort of a thermostat, programme and fan.
