Pellet Stove or Coal Stove? Which One Suits You

The question we hear most from customers replacing a stove: "Should I switch to a pellet stove or stay with coal?" We sell both, so rather than pushing one, here is when each makes sense. The one-line answer: a pellet stove offers comfort and control; a coal stove offers independence and simplicity.

How they work

A pellet stove takes fuel from its hopper with an auger, supplies combustion air with a fan and tries to hold the temperature you set on the panel or remote. As long as the hopper is full, you do not have to tend it.

A coal stove (cast-iron stove, range cooker or boiler) is fed by hand. You control the heat with the amount of fuel and the air damper. It needs no electricity.

Side by side

  • Feeding: pellet stove automatic; coal stove by hand.
  • Heat control: thermostat and timer on a pellet stove; damper and experience on a coal stove.
  • Electricity: a pellet stove needs it and stops during a power cut. A coal stove works without it, which can be decisive where cuts are frequent.
  • Ash and cleaning: ENplus A1 pellets have at most 0.7% ash, so cleaning is less frequent and less dusty. Coal ash depends on the coal and is printed on the bag; it has to be emptied more often.
  • Fuel: a pellet stove burns only pellets of the diameter and quality in its manual. A coal stove can burn coal and wood together.
  • Storage: pellets are very sensitive to moisture and need a dry, enclosed store. Coal should also be kept dry but suffers less.
  • Up-front cost: because of its electronics (fan, motor, control board) a pellet stove usually costs more to buy than a classic cast-iron stove, and those parts need servicing.
  • Flue: both connect to a flue. A pellet stove is fan-assisted, so follow the manual for the connection; either way, have the flue swept before every season.

"Which is more efficient?"

Efficiency belongs to the appliance, not the fuel. The efficiency of a pellet or coal stove is stated on its label and in its manual; the same fuel burns at different efficiencies in different appliances. Pellet stoves usually burn in a more controlled way because they adjust air and feed automatically, but only your appliance's figure tells you how much.

Work out the running cost yourself

A price list alone does not tell you which fuel heats more cheaply; you have to divide the price per kg by the calorific value and the appliance efficiency:

Cost of 1 kWh of useful heat = fuel price per kg ÷ (calorific value in kWh/kg × appliance efficiency)

  • Pellets: ENplus classes require a net calorific value of at least 4.6 kWh/kg.
  • Coal: the bag gives kcal/kg; divide by 860 for kWh/kg (e.g. 6,000 kcal/kg ≈ 7.0 kWh/kg). Use the net (as received) value rather than a "dry basis" figure where possible.
  • Efficiency: the figure on your own stove's label.

Put current fuel prices into this formula and you will see the real difference for your home. We do not publish pellet prices on the site; ask for the current price on WhatsApp.

Who should choose which?

A pellet stove suits homes that want a steady temperature all day, where nobody is around to feed a stove, that want to avoid ash and dust, where power cuts are rare and there is a dry place to store pellets.

A coal stove suits users for whom working without electricity matters, who want to burn coal and wood together, who expect a long overnight burn, who are used to managing a stove by hand and want to keep the up-front cost low. A range cooker also doubles as an oven.

Safety is the same for both

Whichever stove you choose, a clean flue, sound pipe joints and a carbon monoxide detector are essential. Never burn a fuel the manual does not allow: no coal in a pellet stove, no pellets in a classic stove.

For ENplus classes, storage and fuel comparisons see our pellet page (in Turkish); for stoves see the automatic pellet stove and all stove models.
