What Should You Look for in a Camping Stove? Flue, Output, Fuel and Safety

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: check five things in a camping stove: the flue outlet (a tent needs a stove jack), heat output, fuel, carrying weight and carbon monoxide safety. The Baba's Camping Camper on our site is a stainless-steel camping stove with an oven; the manufacturer's table lists 6 kW, a Ø100 mm flue, no fan and single glass. Its price is 34,750 TL (VAT included, 20 October 2026).

What should you check when buying a camping stove?

1. How does the flue leave the tent?

A wood or pellet camping stove may be used only in a tent with a stove jack (a heat-resistant flue ring). The flue pipe must run outside and above the top of the tent without touching the fabric. A stove without a flue connection must never run inside a closed vehicle or caravan.

2. How many kW does a tent need?

The rule we use for homes (1 kW ≈ 9–11 m² with average insulation) does not fit an uninsulated tent: a tent loses heat fast, but its volume is small. Camper's 6 kW is in the same class as the smallest home stoves on our site (4–8 kW); in a large group tent the stove may have to burn at full output all the time. Check the tent maker's stove recommendation too.

3. Which fuel does it burn?

Pellets are light, dry and packed, and travel to camp in bags. Wood may be available at the campsite but must be dry; damp wood makes soot and smoke. For pellet quality see how to recognise ENplus A1 pellets.

4. Is it easy to carry?

A stainless body resists moisture; folding legs and detachable flue sections make carrying easier. Until weight and dimensions are confirmed, ask us about space in your vehicle before ordering.

5. How do you guard against carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless; every fuel-burning appliance in an enclosed space is a risk. Use a battery carbon monoxide detector in the tent, do not leave the stove burning while you sleep and do not close the ventilation opening. At any headache, dizziness, nausea or drowsiness get into the open air at once and call 112.

What does it depend on?

  • Tent type: No stove in a tent without a stove jack.
  • Campsite rules: Fires and stoves are subject to the campsite operator's rules; ask in advance.
  • Ground: A non-combustible base under the hot bottom; protect the tent floor.
  • Wind: The flue tip can blow back in wind; use a spark arrester and secure the pipe.
  • A fixed small building? For a vineyard house, cabin or bungalow, consider a small pellet stove instead of a camping stove; for kW see the stove sizing calculator.

For fixed small buildings (not camping stoves; a flue is required): Natural Mini 4 kW, 40–45 m² per the manufacturer, 25 kg, no electricity, 9,800 TL; Eco Mini 8 kW, manual, 32,000 TL. Details in 8 kW pellet stove.

Safety note

No stove is "smokeless"; pellets, wood and coal all produce smoke and carbon monoxide as they burn. A flue of the right diameter that draws properly and leak-tight pipe joints are therefore essential; detailed rules in are pellet stoves harmful. Use a carbon monoxide detector at home; with headache, dizziness or nausea, air the room, get outside and call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Frequently asked questions

Can a camping stove be used in a tent?

Only in a tent with a stove jack, with the flue led outside and a carbon monoxide detector. Never in a tent without a stove jack.

How many kW should a camping stove be?

It depends on the tent's size and fabric; the floor-area rule for homes does not fit an uninsulated tent. Camper is 6 kW according to the manufacturer; check the tent maker's advice too.

Can you burn pellets in a camping stove?

Camper's photos show a side pellet hopper.

Can a camping stove be used inside a caravan?

Not inside a closed vehicle or caravan without a flue connection; carbon monoxide builds up.

How much does a camping stove cost?

Baba's Camping Camper is 34,750 TL on our site (VAT included, 20 October 2026).
