How much fuel does a 100 m² home need for winter?

Short answer: A 100 m² home with average insulation, heated by a stove in the inland Aegean, burns about 2.4–3.0 tonnes of domestic coal (about ₺20,200–₺25,200 at the Domestic Soma Coal price), 1.8–2.3 tonnes of imported coal or 2.8–3.4 tonnes of dry oak firewood per season. The calculator adjusts this for insulation, climate, building and ceiling; it is an estimate.

This calculation is a rough estimate. Actual consumption varies with the climate, the ceiling height, the number of rooms heated and how you use the heating. Talk to us for the exact amount.

How is it calculated?

The calculation is for the Aegean climate (İzmir, Ödemiş and the surrounding area — milder than Central and Eastern Anatolia) and a full heating season. The result is first worked out for domestic coal and then converted to the fuel you choose.

1. Coal needed (kg/m², full season)

InsulationCoal needed
Good (new building, double glazing, external insulation)18 – 22 kg/m²
Medium (standard building, double glazing, no external insulation)24 – 30 kg/m²
Poor (old building, single glazing, no insulation)32 – 40 kg/m²

2. Heating factor

Stove ×1.00 · Central heating (solid fuel boiler) ×1.25 — a boiler heats the whole floor, not only the rooms in use, so it burns more.

3. Fuel conversion (by heat value, by weight)

The table is set up for domestic lignite. The other fuels are scaled to it according to their calorific values and how efficiently they burn:

  • Domestic coal (TKİ Soma lignite, 4,800-5,200 kcal/kg net) ×1.00
  • Imported coal (Süper Enerji Siberian, 7,000-7,800 kcal/kg dry basis) ×0.77 — once moisture is allowed for it gives about 30% more heat than domestic coal, so less is needed by weight
  • Firewood (dry oak, ~4,000-4,200 kcal/kg) ×1.15 — its calorific value is close to lignite; the difference comes from how efficiently it burns
  • Pirina (4,800-5,200 kcal/kg) ×0.86 — olive pit fuel, with a higher calorific value than lignite
  • Pellets (ENplus A1: at least 4.6 kWh/kg ≈ 3,950 kcal/kg) ×0.75 — assumption: a pellet stove/boiler burns in a more controlled way than an ordinary stove; the real efficiency depends on your appliance

The result is also multiplied by three factors, each of which shifts it considerably:

  • Region: coast ×0.80, inland Aegean ×1.00, highland and cold areas ×1.45 — the difference in winter between Çeşme and Kütahya is almost double
  • Building type: middle floor ×0.80, top/ground floor ×1.00, detached house ×1.30 — according to the number of surfaces that lose heat
  • Ceiling height: standard ×1.00, 3 m and above ×1.15 — heating is about volume, not floor area

4. Bags and sacks

Coal 25 kg bag · Firewood 28-30 kg sack (yellow oak 30 kg, red oak 28 kg) · Pellets 15 kg and 20 kg bags (for firewood and pellets the result is shown for both sizes; pellet orders of 1 tonne or more are delivered as bags on pallets).

Formula

Need (kg) = Area (m²) × insulation kg/m² × heating factor × fuel factor × region factor × building factor × ceiling factor

These factors are averages based on field experience; they are not exact values. Your own consumption can fall outside this range depending on the ceiling height, the number of rooms heated, the efficiency of the stove/boiler and how you use the heating.

Example: winter fuel for a 100 m² home (average insulation, stove, inland Aegean) — tonnes, bags and cost (VAT incl.)

Imported coal1.8–2.3 tonnes74–92 × 25 kg₺31,000–₺38,800at the Süper Enerji Siberian Coal price
Yellow oak firewood2.8–3.4 tonnes92–115 × 30 kg₺33,100–₺41,400at the Yellow Oak Stove Wood price
Olive pit fuel2.1–2.6 tonnes83–103 × 25 kg₺18,600–₺23,200at the Pirina (Olive Pit Fuel) price
Pine pellets (pellet stove)1.8–2.3 tonnes120–150 × 15 kg₺32,400–₺40,500at the 100% Pine Wood Pellets (ENplus A1) price

* Amounts use the calculator coefficients above; costs are the amount × the current per-kg price (tonne price ÷ 1,000, or bag price ÷ bag weight), rounded to ₺100. Pellets assume a pellet stove.

How Is Winter Fuel Need Calculated?

There is no single answer to "how many tons of coal do I need", because the biggest factor in consumption is insulation. A new building with external insulation and double glazing gets by on 18-22 kg of coal per square metre, while an old, uninsulated building with single glazing may need 32-40 kg to reach the same temperature. Two neighbouring flats of the same size can therefore burn amounts of fuel that differ by a factor of two.

The second factor is how you heat. A stove usually heats only the rooms in use; a solid fuel boiler (central heating) heats the whole floor and so uses about 25% more fuel. The third is the type of fuel: for the same heat you need about 1.15 times as much firewood as domestic coal by weight, while pellets burned in a pellet stove need less, about three quarters as much.

The calculator above weighs these factors together and gives a range for the Aegean climate (İzmir, Ödemiş, Tire, Bayındır, Kiraz, Beydağ and the surrounding area). For Central and Eastern Anatolia these values are too low. The lower end of the range represents economical use; the upper end represents heating the whole house all day.

Frequently Asked Questions — Fuel Calculator

How many tons of coal does a 100 m² home need?

In the Aegean climate, a moderately insulated 100 m² home heated with a stove needs about 2.4 - 3.0 tons of DOMESTIC coal (Soma lignite) for a full season. With a high-calorie imported coal such as Siberian the amount is lower: about 1.8 - 2.3 tons. With good insulation, domestic coal comes to 1.8 - 2.2 tons; with poor insulation it can rise to 3.2 - 4.0 tons. If central heating (a solid fuel boiler) is used, increase the amount by about 25%.

How much do I need if I use firewood instead of coal?

The heat value of dry oak firewood per kilogram (~4,000 kcal/kg) is close to that of domestic lignite; the difference comes largely from how efficiently it burns. For the same heat you need about 1.15 times as much firewood by weight — roughly 2.9 tons of dry oak instead of 2.5 tons of domestic coal. Compared with high-calorie imported coal, the amount of firewood needed is about one and a half times as much.

How many bags are there in a ton of coal?

1 ton of coal is 40 bags of 25 kg. Firewood sacks are 28-30 kg (yellow oak 30 kg, red oak 28 kg). Pine pellets are sold in 15 kg and 20 kg bags: 1 ton of pellets is about 67 bags of 15 kg, or 50 bags of 20 kg. Pellet orders of 1 tonne or more are delivered as bags on pallets.

Is the calculator result exact?

No. The result is an estimated range. Actual consumption varies with the climate, the ceiling height, the number of rooms heated, the efficiency of the stove or boiler and how you use the heating. For the exact quantity and price, contact us on WhatsApp or by phone.
