Pellet Stove Smoking or Showing an Ignition Error: 10 Checks

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: the great majority of ignition errors and smoking come from four causes: a dirty or badly seated burn pot, damp or dusty pellets, insufficient flue draught and a worn door seal. Check these first. As a yardstick: ENplus A1 pellets have at most 10% moisture, at most 0.5% fines in the sack and at least 98% mechanical durability.

Pellets outside these limits can produce ignition errors on their own. The 10 checks below are brand-neutral; if your stove shows an error code, look up its meaning in your manual.

Which symptom points to which fault?

Pellet stove faults: symptom, most likely cause and first check
SymptomMost likely causeCheck first
Ignition error, pellets pile up unburned in the potPot clogged or not seated; igniter not heating1, 2, 8
Burns but smokes, glass blackens fastDamp/dusty pellets, dirty pot, too little air1, 3, 5, 9
Smell of smoke in the roomDoor seal, ash drawer cover, leaking flue5, 6, 7
Lazy, orange, tall flameLow flue draught, blocked air intake7, 9
No pellets arriving, hopper fullHopper bridging, lid switch, auger4, 10

The 10 checks

  1. Is the burn pot clean? Let the stove cool and unplug it. Remove the pot and open every air hole in its base; scrape out clinker. A blocked hole stops the ignition air from reaching the pellets.
  2. Is the pot fully seated? The igniter hole and the pot's hole must line up; if a gap remains the hot air escapes sideways instead of reaching the pellets and the stove reports an "ignition error".
  3. Are the pellets dry and sound? Shiny surface, hard break, little dust. Drop a handful into water: good pellets sink, damp or loose pellets fall apart fast. The dust at the bottom of the sack smothers the pot; how to tell is in how to recognise ENplus A1 pellets.
  4. Is the hopper bridging? Long pellets and dust form an arch in the hopper and the auger turns empty. Empty the hopper and clean its base; leave the dust at the bottom of the sack at every fill.
  5. Is the door seal leaking? The paper test: trap a strip of paper in the door and close it; if it pulls out easily the seal is finished. A leaking door spoils the combustion air and lets smoke into the room.
  6. Are the ash drawer and cleaning covers closed? A cover left ajar behaves like a worn door seal.
  7. Are the flue and T-piece clean, is there draught? Open the cap of the T-piece at the outlet and empty the ash; have the pipe swept. Too many bends, a long horizontal run and a dirty pipe reduce draught: what a pellet stove flue should look like.
  8. Is the igniter heating? A few minutes after the ignition command a red glow should be visible through the hole in the pot. If not, the igniter or a fuse has failed; replacement is a job for the service technician.
  9. Is the air intake open? The air pipe at the back and its grille clog with dust and leaves. The room must also get air; with a cooker hood running the draught can reverse.
  10. What does the error code say? The flame sensor, flue temperature sensor, pressure switch and auger motor announce themselves with a code. Read the code in the manual; leave electrical work other than sensor cleaning to the authorised service.

When to call service

If the problem persists after the first 7 items, if the igniter does not glow, if the exhaust fan is noisy or not turning, or if the same code keeps returning, stop running the stove and call service. The EPA recommends professional cleaning at least once a year; this pre-season service prevents most mid-winter faults. For the regular cleaning routine, see pellet stove maintenance: cleaning, ash and efficiency.

What does it depend on?

  • Pellet quality and storage: Pellets that have taken on moisture are the most frequent cause; keep sacks dry and off the floor.
  • Cleaning frequency: Depending on use, the pot is cleaned every few days and the heat exchanger at the interval in the manual.
  • Flue design: The number of bends, horizontal length and insulation determine draught.
  • Weather: The southerly "lodos" wind and gusts can reduce draught; the Turkish Ministry of Health warns about flued stoves in lodos weather.

Safety

A smoking pellet stove is a source of carbon monoxide. Have a working detector; with headache, nausea or dizziness get into fresh air and call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors. Never "calm" the stove by choking the air setting or narrowing the flue.

The cheapest fix for ignition problems is often a change of fuel: low-dust 6 mm pine pellets with the ENplus A1 logo, in 15 and 20 kg sacks. If it is time to replace the stove, the options are on the stoves page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a pellet stove give an ignition error?

Most often: a clogged or unseated pot, damp pellets, an igniter that does not heat. Cleaning the pot and dry pellets solve most cases.

Why is my pellet stove smoking?

Incomplete combustion: too little air, low draught or poor pellets. If smoke is entering the room, check the seal and covers and stop using it.

Why does the pellet stove glass blacken so quickly?

Damp or dusty pellets, a dirty pot and long running on a low setting. Cleaning the glass removes the symptom, not the cause.

Why is my pellet stove not taking pellets?

Hopper bridging, a hopper lid left open (some models have a safety switch) or the auger motor. Empty and clean the hopper; if there is no motor sound, call service.

Why does my pellet stove keep going out?

The flame or flue temperature sensor is not seeing its threshold: a dirty sensor, poor pellets or low draught. Read the code in the manual.
