Range Cooker, Cast-Iron Fireplace Stove or Pellet Stove? Which One Is for You
Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:
Short answer: if you also want to cook on it, a range cooker stove; if you want the pleasure of the flame and simple heating without electricity, a cast-iron fireplace stove; if you want thermostat-controlled, automatically fed comfort, a pellet stove. The difference in numbers: the EU Ecodesign minimum seasonal efficiency is 79% for pellet stoves and 65% for closed stoves burning wood and coal.
A pellet stove needs 100–300 W of electricity while running, the other two need none; the carbon monoxide limit is 300 mg/m³ for pellet stoves and 1,500 for the others. The table below splits the decision into eight criteria.
Which one suits you? Decision table
| Criterion | Range cooker stove | Cast-iron fireplace stove | Pellet stove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood and coal | Wood (oak recommended) | 6 mm wood pellets only |
| Feeding | By hand, every few hours | By hand, every few hours | Automatic auger; the hopper can last more than a day |
| Electricity | Not needed | Not needed | Needed: 100–300 W running, 300–800 W igniting |
| Cooking | Hotplate and oven | A kettle on the top | None |
| Minimum efficiency (Ecodesign 2022) | 65% (closed solid fuel) | 65% | 79% |
| Ash and maintenance | Daily ash, weekly pipe | Daily ash, seasonal flue | Little ash; burn pot and exchanger regularly, yearly service |
| Works in a power cut? | Yes | Yes | No (except rare gravity-fed models) |
Who is a range cooker stove for?
For homes where the kitchen, or the whole living area together with the kitchen, is heated and the cooker burns all day in winter anyway. A range cooker heats the room and cooks on its hotplate, bakes bread and pastry in its oven; it burns wood and coal together and needs no electricity. The price: manual loading, daily ash, and hotplate and oven temperatures set by experience. In village houses, vineyard houses and detached homes with large kitchens the first choice is often the range cooker; if it will burn coal, see the top-down method in how to light a coal stove.
Who is a cast-iron fireplace stove for?
For the focal point of the living room, in homes where watching the flame is part of keeping warm. The wide-glass cast-iron body gives radiant heat and cools slowly; it is far more efficient than an open fireplace because combustion is controlled. It burns wood, with dry oak and beech giving the best results; it needs no electricity and works in a power cut. The price: a wood store, daily ash, regular flue sweeping and heat without a thermostat. For choosing wood, see oak, beech or pine: which firewood.
Who is a pellet stove for?
For homes that want to be warm at a set time in the morning, do not want to deal with ash and loading, and have reliable electricity. With the hopper full the stove burns by itself and holds the target temperature; ash is scarce (at most 0.7% for ENplus A1). The price: dependence on electricity, fan noise, the ability to burn pellets only and a yearly authorised service. How many kW you need is in how many m² a pellet stove heats, daily consumption in how many kilos a pellet stove burns per day; for the cost comparison with a coal stove, pellet stove or coal stove.
What does it depend on?
- The layout of the home: A kitchen-centred home leans towards a range cooker; a living-room-centred home towards a fireplace stove or a pellet stove.
- Access to fuel and storage: Do you have room to keep wood dry? Pellet sacks need an enclosed, dry place.
- Electricity: With frequent cuts a pellet stove is not enough on its own: what happens to a pellet stove in a power cut.
- Time and habit: Is loading several times a day and removing ash a chore or a ritual for you?
- Flue: All three need one; a pellet stove needs a small-diameter (mostly 80 mm) but strictly specified flue, the range cooker and cast-iron stove a classic chimney.
Safety: common to all three
All three burn fuel and can produce carbon monoxide; none of them is "smokeless". A carbon monoxide detector, yearly flue sweeping and dry fuel are essential with all three; with symptoms, fresh air and 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.
We sell all three types; every option is on the stoves page. You can order the winter fuel together with the stove: firewood, coal and pine pellets with the ENplus A1 logo. The cards below show the current price; for models and manufacturer data of the brands we are an authorised dealer for, see the pellet stove with oven, cast-iron stove models and 8 kW pellet stove comparisons.
One example from each of these brands: a cast-iron vertical cooker, a cast-iron fireplace stove and a manual pellet stove.

Frequently asked questions
Range cooker stove or pellet stove?
If you want cooking and operation without electricity, the range cooker; if you want thermostat-controlled, automatic, low-ash heating, the pellet stove. The minimum efficiency is 79% for pellets, 65% for the range cooker.
Which heats better, a fireplace or a pellet stove?
A cast-iron fireplace stove gives radiant heat and works in a power cut; a pellet stove spreads the air with a fan, holds the target temperature and gives the same heat with less fuel.
How many square metres does a cast-iron fireplace stove heat?
It depends on its nominal output; the rule of 9–11 m² per kW with average insulation applies here too.
What determines cast-iron fireplace stove prices?
Casting thickness, glass size, enamel finish and nominal output. Current prices appear on the product card and the product page.
Does a pellet stove work without electricity?
Standard models do not. If heating without electricity is your priority, choose a range cooker or a cast-iron fireplace stove.
