Petra Classic Central Fireplace is a free-standing fireplace designed to sit in the middle of a room, open or glazed on all sides, with the flue leaving from the top. The manufacturer's image shows a square-section hood body, a lower fire platform and glass doors opening to the sides; the room photo shows it in the centre of a living room with the pipe running to the ceiling. Who it is for: large, high-ceilinged living rooms, hotel lobbies, restaurant centre areas; anyone wanting the fireplace at the heart of the space instead of built into a wall. As this is a high-priced item we recommend clarifying these before ordering. Installation: central fireplaces need a flue line passing through the ceiling; the roof penetration, insulation and floor protection must be planned at project stage. Assembly is a job for a qualified team; the product is not delivered ready to use.

What to look for when choosing a fireplace

Freestanding or built-in?

A cast-iron fireplace stove stands in the room and connects to the flue. A built-in insert goes into the wall and is clad around, so the opening must be measured on site before installation.

Indoors or outdoors?

Garden fireplaces are made for terraces and gardens and must not be used indoors. For a living room, models with a glass door are preferred.

Closed fire

A fireplace with a glass door gives off heat in a more controlled way than an open fireplace and stops sparks reaching the room.

Flue and location

Check the draw of the flue and the clearance to combustible surfaces (wood, curtains, furniture) before installation.

The right firewood

Burn well-seasoned hardwood (oak, beech). Green wood gives little heat, smokes heavily and coats the glass and flue with soot.

Safe use

Have the chimney swept before every heating season.
Fit a carbon monoxide detector in any home with a stove or fireplace.
Keep flammable items away from the stove and keep children away from hot surfaces.
Never burn plastic, painted wood or rubbish; use only the fuel suited to the appliance.
