How Big Should a Stove Base Be? Stove Pipe, Tool Set and Log Holder Guide

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: a stove base must be larger than the stove's footprint plus the area in front where ash falls, and the pipe diameter must match the stove's flue outlet. The Ignova bases on our site are 75 × 75 cm, 2 mm laser-cut steel with a 12 cm rim, at 3,990 TL each.

The Ignova 13 cm (130 mm) matt anthracite pipe and elbow series is listed from 390 TL. The cast-iron tool set is 3,450 TL and the steel log holder 3,600 TL (site prices on 20 October 2026).

Is the base big enough for your stove?

First check the stove's footprint and the front clearance in its manual. Some examples from the manufacturers' data sheets:

Is a 75 × 75 cm base enough for your stove: body size (cm) and flue outlet
StoveBody (W×D)Flue outlet75 × 75 base
Baba's Eco 8 / Eco Fan 847 × 52 cm*130 mmFootprint fits; check front area against the manual
Baba's Flame Fan 1243 × 57 cm*130 mmFootprint fits; front area per manual
Baba's Gold 12 cooker51 × 58 cm*130 mmFootprint fits; front area per manual
Baba's Saphire 10 cooker91.5 × 63 cm*130 mmToo small: the sheet asks for a base of at least 120 × 85 cm
Ignova Impera V2—130 mm—

* manufacturer data sheet: the value was read from the data sheet or drawing image on the manufacturer's product page.

What size should a stove pipe be?

The pipe diameter must equal the stove's flue outlet, with no reducer in between. The manual Baba's Stove models and Ignova Impera V2 on our site have 130 mm outlets, the Camper camping stove 100 mm. Automatic pellet stoves (Gold E 12, Hidro A and D) have 80 mm outlets; they need a sealed flue line suited to pellet stoves, not ordinary stove pipe: can a pellet stove work without a flue, and what should the flue be like.

Ignova's 13 cm series lists one elbow and straight pipes of 25, 33, 50 and 70 cm, all matt anthracite. Tell us the parts and lengths you need before ordering and the unit price is settled.

How do you fit the stove pipe?

  • Joint direction: Pipes are fitted so that each section slides into the next from the stove towards the chimney, so condensate and soot do not leak out.
  • Short horizontal runs, few elbows: Every elbow and horizontal metre reduces draught.
  • Leak-tightness: Joints must sit firmly; clean the pipe inside at the annual service: chimney sweeping and stove maintenance.

Do you need a tool set and a log holder?

The Ignova 4-piece tool set consists of a poker, shovel, log tongs and brush; per the manufacturer it is cast iron, black, with paint rated to 800 °C. The log holder is laser-cut steel with matt black oven paint. Do not place the log holder too close to the front of the stove.

What does it depend on?

  • Floor: On parquet, laminate or carpet a base is essential.
  • Stove size: The footprint and front ash area must stay inside the base; if you have not chosen a stove yet, find its output with the stove sizing calculator.
  • Flue outlet: Top or rear? That decides the number of elbows.
  • Clearances: A base does not replace the wall and furniture clearances in the stove manual.
  • Stove type: For cast-iron and wood stoves see cast-iron stove models; for pellet stoves the 8 kW and 12 kW guides.

Safety note

No stove is "smokeless"; pellets, wood and coal all produce smoke and carbon monoxide as they burn. A flue of the right diameter that draws properly and leak-tight pipe joints are therefore essential. Use a carbon monoxide detector at home; with headache, dizziness or nausea, air the room, get outside and call 112: stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a stove base be?

Larger than the stove's footprint and the ash area in front of it. A 75 × 75 cm base covers the footprint of stoves up to roughly 50 × 60 cm; for wide cookers such as Saphire the sheet asks for 120 × 85 cm.

What is a stove base for?

It keeps falling ash and embers off a combustible floor and protects the floor from heat. On the Ignova bases the 12 cm rim reduces the spread of embers.

What size is a stove pipe?

The same as the stove's flue outlet: 130 mm on the manual stoves on our site, 100 mm on the camping stove, 80 mm on automatic pellet stoves (special pellet flue).

How is a stove pipe fitted?

Sections slide into each other from the stove towards the chimney, with as few elbows and as short a horizontal run as possible; joints must sit firmly.

How much is a fireside tool set?

The Ignova 4-piece cast-iron tool set is 3,450 TL on our site (20 October 2026).
