A pellet stove feeds itself, but it does not clean itself. Built-up ash and clinker first cut efficiency, then turn into faults and safety problems. This is a brand-neutral, general maintenance guide. Every model's parts, cleaning intervals and methods differ: follow your own stove's manual first; the EPA, too, advises reading the owner's manual before operating the stove.
The Basic Rule: Cold and Unplugged
Start cleaning only once the stove has fully cooled. Unless the manual says otherwise, disconnect the power. Pellet stove ash can look cold on the surface and still hide embers inside.
The Burn Pot
The burn pot, where the pellets burn, is the heart of the stove. If the air holes in its base clog with ash and clinker, the stove cannot get enough air: the flame becomes lazy, the glass blackens, unburned pellets pile up and the stove may throw an ignition error. Empty the pot as often as the manual recommends, scrape the residue out of the holes and make sure it sits fully back in place. Hard lumps (clinker) in the pot usually point to pellet quality.
The Ash Pan and Disposing of Ash
- Empty the ash pan before it is full; overflowing ash gets into the air passages and the fan compartment.
- Do not empty ash into a plastic bucket or a bin bag. The US Fire Administration (USFA) advises keeping ashes in a metal container with a lid, outside, at least 3 metres from the home.
- Do not use an ordinary vacuum cleaner on ash; fine ash can pass the filter and embers can start a fire. If your manual recommends a dedicated ash vacuum, use that.
The Glass
Clean the glass when it is cold, with a non-abrasive cleaner recommended in the manual and a soft cloth; abrasive products scratch it. If the glass blackens very quickly, the problem is usually not the glass: it may be a clogged burn pot, a dirty flue passage, or damp or poor-quality pellets.
Flue Passages, Fan and Chimney
Over time ash also builds up in the stove's internal flue passages and heat exchanger. A dirty exchanger gives less heat to the room and more to the chimney, which means more pellets for the same warmth. Some models have a cleaning rod for the exchanger; on others you open access covers; the method is in the manual. The fan, seals and sensors are a job for an authorised service technician. The EPA says pellet stoves need regular cleaning to run efficiently and safely and recommends professional cleaning at least once a year. Cleaning the chimney and flue pipe is part of that service; for details, see chimney cleaning and stove maintenance.
A pellet stove is also a fuel-burning appliance: use a carbon monoxide detector in the home where it is installed. For why and where to fit one, see stove gas symptoms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Pellet Quality and Storage
What affects maintenance the most is the pellet you burn. High-ash pellets fill the pot and passages faster and form clinker. The EPA notes that many manufacturers recommend only pellets from qualified producers. We explain how to recognise certified pellets in how to recognise ENplus A1 pellets.
Pellets must stay dry: wet pellets swell and crumble, and the dust they create clogs the feed auger and the burn pot. Store bags in a closed, dry place off the ground and never put wet pellets in the stove. Details: how to store pellets. Emptying the hopper and cleaning the stove at the end of the season stops pellets from sitting in the hopper absorbing moisture all summer.

Quality class: ENplus A1 (on the bag) · Raw material: 100% pine
Quick Checklist
- Often: burn pot and its holes, ash pan, glass.
- Periodically: internal flue passages and heat exchanger, bottom of the hopper (as often as the manual says).
- Once a year: authorised service, with chimney and flue pipe cleaning.
- Always: dry, certified pellets and a working carbon monoxide detector.
