How Should a Stove Be Installed? Chimney, Pipe, Clearances and Pellet Stove Installation Tips

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: connect a stove to its own chimney by the shortest airtight route, never to a boiler flue. Turkish rules want the chimney 0.8 m above the ridge. Horizontal pipe rises at least 20 mm per metre, with few elbows. Use a non-combustible pad, keep combustibles 0.9 m away and fit a carbon monoxide detector.

Your stove's documentation has the final word. Petra, Baba's Stove and Ignova publish no installation manuals online; the "example manuals" quoted here (ESSE, Fireview, Enviro) belong to other makers. In the İzmir region we install the stoves we sell; the installation fee is confirmed on WhatsApp: stove installation in İzmir.

What does the chimney need for a stove installation?

Article 58 of Turkey's Regulation on the Fire Protection of Buildings requires flues to meet Turkish Standards and bars stove pipes from boiler chimneys. To protect draught, chimneys should stand at least 6 m from taller buildings where possible and rise at least 0.8 m above the ridge. Türkiye's Ministry of Health notes that blocked or badly designed chimneys raise the carbon monoxide risk.

Have an old chimney checked first. ESSE's example manual wants the flue swept and examined before installation, swept again within the first month of use, and gives a healthy draught of 12–25 Pa. The Fireview manual forbids a chimney serving another appliance; a cracked chimney draws poorly. Upkeep: chimney cleaning and stove maintenance.

How is stove pipe connected: slope, elbows and joints?

The Ministry of Health says flue pipes should take the shortest route and not reach far into the chimney. Details from example manuals:

  • Slope: Horizontal pipe rises at least 20 mm per metre toward the chimney (Fireview, based on Canada's CSA B365).
  • Elbows: No more than two 90-degree elbows; use 45 degrees where possible (Fireview). ESSE avoids bends over 45 degrees from vertical.
  • Joints: Overlap pipes at least 30 mm and fix each joint with three sheet-metal screws (Fireview); ESSE wants every joint sealed.
  • Direction: Crimped ends point toward the stove. Tar leaking from joints: why stove pipe drips.
  • Passages: Pipe must not pass through a combustible ceiling, attic or closet (Fireview). The Turkish regulation requires a clay sleeve where pipe crosses the combustible part of a timber-framed wall.

The stove's outlet sets the pipe size; for example, Ignova's product page lists a Ø130 mm top flue outlet for the Impera. Choosing pipe and mats: stove mat and stove pipe guide.

How far should a stove be from walls and furniture?

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises keeping a wood stove 3 feet (3 × 0.3048 ≈ 0.9 m) from anything that can burn; manufacturer clearances vary by model. The Turkish regulation bans wood, kindling, coal, matches, petrol and other flammables under or beside the stove.

What goes under the stove?

The Turkish regulation requires a metal-clad board, marble or similar under the stove to protect wooden and painted surfaces; on concrete this is not mandatory. The Fireview manual says a protector on a combustible floor must cover the area under the stove, 16 inches in front and 8 inches beside the loading and ash doors.

How should a stove room be ventilated?

A fire draws its air from the room. ESSE's example manual requires adequate combustion air, possibly a dedicated vent that must never be blocked, and no extractor fan in the same room.

What is different about installing a pellet stove?

The EPA notes pellet stoves need electricity for their motorized parts. An example pellet stove manual (Enviro Meridian) asks for a grounded, accessible 220–240 V, 50 Hz outlet and a sealed, airtight exhaust, and forbids connecting the stove to a chimney serving another appliance. It makes outside fresh air mandatory in airtight homes and strongly recommends it elsewhere. Why a pellet stove cannot go without a flue: can a pellet stove be flueless; power cuts: pellet stove power use.

What happens at the first firing after installation?

First fires smell of paint; breaking in: cast-iron stove first firing. ESSE's example manual asks the installer to demonstrate the controls and cleaning access; HETAS lists a correctly positioned carbon monoxide alarm and the manufacturer's instructions among the hand-over items.

When should you call a professional?

Use a competent installer if the chimney is new or long unused, the pipe crosses a wall or ceiling, or smoke spills back. To size the stove: pellet stove kW calculator; seasonal fuel: fuel needs calculator; models: stove models.

What does it depend on?

  • Chimney: Cross-section, height, insulation and tall structures nearby.
  • Stove outlet: Pipe diameter and outlet direction vary by model.
  • Room: Floor (concrete or timber), wall material and air supply.
  • Fuel and stove type: Automatic pellet stoves and fan models need a socket.

Safety note

No fuel is smokeless; every stove produces carbon monoxide and a poor installation raises the risk. Where wood and coal are burned, the Turkish regulation requires pipes to be cleaned monthly and chimneys every two months. The Ministry of Health recommends a carbon monoxide detector wherever a fuel-burning heater is used; with headache, dizziness or weakness, ventilate, get out and call 112: stove gas symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

How long can stove pipe be?

An example manual (Fireview) says a single-wall assembly should not exceed 3 m overall and a horizontal run 4 feet (≈1.2 m).

Can a stove share a boiler flue?

No. The Turkish regulation bars stove pipes from boiler chimneys; the example manuals forbid flues serving another appliance.

Does a pellet stove need its own socket?

The example manual asks for a grounded, accessible 220–240 V, 50 Hz outlet and recommends a surge-protected power bar.
