What to Look For When Buying a Cast-Iron Stove?

Prepared by: the Yak Gelsin teamLast updated:

Short answer: when buying a cast-iron stove, check 8 things: enough output (kW) for your room, your chimney's diameter and draught, the fuel you will burn, the stove's weight and the floor it will stand on, the glass, whether you need an oven, a written warranty with spare parts, and installation. Most of these values are in the product's spec table; if they are not, ask before you order.

8-point checklist for buying a cast-iron stove
PointWhat to checkExample from our site
1. OutputkW and the manufacturer's m²Natural 20h 4–6 kW, Impera V2 14 kW
2. FlueFlue outlet diameter, chimney draughtImpera V2: Ø130 mm top outlet
3. FuelFuel allowed by the manufacturerNatural models: wood and coal
4. WeightDoors, stairs, floorBetween 87 kg and 155 kg
5. GlassCeramic glass, number of panesNatural: 3 ceramic panes
6. OvenDo you cook on it?With oven: 50h, 60h, Impera V2
7. WarrantyTerm, coverage, spare partsImpera V2: cast body 2 years
8. InstallationWho installs, is the chimney readyWe install in İzmir

1. Is the output (kW) and heating area enough?

First find your room's heat demand; ceiling height, insulation and climate change it. The manufacturer's m² figure is a guide, but it is given by different methods from one manufacturer to another: for the Impera V2 a wide range of 70–140 m² is stated. Convert your own space to kW with the stove sizing calculator and compare it with the model's output. An oversized stove gets run low, and a low, air-starved fire dirties the glass and the flue faster.

2. Are the flue diameter and chimney suitable?

The stove pipe must match the stove's flue outlet; the pipe must not be narrowed. On our site the cast-iron model whose flue diameter is given by the manufacturer is the Impera V2: Ø130 mm top outlet. For the Natural models the flue diameter is not on the manufacturer's page; confirm it before ordering. For a clean, properly drawing chimney, pipe slope and the number of bends: how should a stove be installed.

3. Which fuel will you burn?

Put only the fuel the manufacturer allows into the stove. For Natural 20h, 36h, 50h and 60h the manufacturer lists wood and coal; the manufacturer shows the Impera V2 burning wood. Coal usually needs air from under the grate, while wood burns well on a bed of ash, so the grate and ash pan matter. Lighting methods: lighting a cast-iron fireplace stove with wood, top-down lighting a coal stove.

4. Weight, size and floor

Cast iron is heavy: per the manufacturers, the cast-iron models on our site weigh between 87 kg (Natural 20h) and 155 kg (Natural 60h). Compare the size with your door width and the spot where the stove will stand, and plan stairs and floors in advance. On wooden, laminate or carpeted floors a non-combustible base is needed: stove base and stove pipe guide.

5. Glass: how many panes, which glass?

Stove glass is not ordinary window glass but heat-resistant ceramic glass. For the Natural models the manufacturer lists 3 ceramic panes, front and both sides; for the Impera V2 it lists three-sided ceramic glass rated to 800 °C. Large glass shows the flame but soots quickly with damp wood or a low fire: why stove glass gets sooty.

6. Do you need an oven?

If you will cook on the stove, buy an oven model; if you only need heat, an oven-less model is lighter and on our site cheaper. Comparison: cast-iron stove with or without an oven.

7. Warranty, spare parts and service

Ask for the warranty term and what it covers in writing: only the cast body, or the glass and gasket too? For the Impera V2 the manufacturer gives a 2-year warranty on the cast body; the warranty term of our other models is not in our product data, so ask before ordering. Glass, door gasket and grate wear or can break with use; also ask whether these parts can be obtained later.

8. Who will install it?

We install the stoves we sell in the İzmir area; the installation fee is confirmed on WhatsApp when you order: stove installation in İzmir. We do not install outside İzmir; have the stove installed by a fitter who knows chimneys.

What does it depend on?

Safety note

No stove is smokeless; wood and coal can produce carbon monoxide as they burn. The stove must be connected to its own chimney with a sealed joint, and the chimney cleaned every season. Use a carbon monoxide detector in the stove room; if you have a headache, dizziness or nausea, air the room, go outside and call 112: signs of stove fumes and carbon monoxide detectors.

Frequently asked questions

How many kW should a cast-iron stove be?

As much as your room needs. Find the kW with the stove sizing calculator and compare it with the manufacturer's output; an oversized stove runs low.

What flue diameter does a cast-iron stove need?

The size of the stove's flue outlet. For the Impera V2 the manufacturer states Ø130 mm; for the Natural models confirm the diameter before ordering.

How long is the warranty on a cast-iron stove?

It depends on the model. For the Impera V2 the manufacturer gives 2 years on the cast body; for other models ask for the term and coverage in writing.

Who installs a cast-iron stove?

We install in the İzmir area, with the fee confirmed on WhatsApp. Outside İzmir, use a fitter who knows chimneys.

Is a second-hand cast-iron stove worth buying?

It can be, but first check the body for cracks, the door gasket and the grate for warping; a cracked body must not be used.
