Short answer: the heating coals in our shop are sold in 25 kg bags, and our coke-type coal in 40 kg sacks. So 1 tonne of coal is 40 bags of 25 kg (1,000 ÷ 25 = 40), or 25 sacks of 40 kg. 2 tonnes are 80 bags and 4 tonnes 160 bags. For any other bag size, divide 1,000 by the bag weight.

“How many kg in a bag of coal?”, “how many bags in a tonne?” and “how many tonnes are 40 bags?” are all answered with the same division. This article covers bag weights, a tonne-to-bag table and why an empty coal bag should never go in the stove. Prices are covered in how much is a tonne of coal and in the current price list.
How many kg is a bag of coal?
According to our product data, our Siberian, Süper Enerji, Soma (TKİ), lump lignite, nut-size boiler coal, block, briquette and Çal Energy coals all come in 25 kg bags. Our coke-type coal comes in 40 kg sacks. 25 kg is a common size in the public sector too: the bagging specification of Türkiye’s state hard-coal company (TTK) requires coal to be bagged at “approximately 25 kg” with machine-sewn bags. Check the bag weight on the product page before you buy; other sellers’ bags may differ.

Brand: Süper Enerji · Calorific value (dry basis): 7000 - 7800 kcal/kg

Producer: TKİ — Turkish Coal Enterprises · Type: Soma Kısrakdere +18 lignite

Calorific value: 4000 - 4500 kcal/kg · Size: Root / mixed
How many bags are in a tonne of coal?
It is a single division: 1 tonne = 1,000 kg, divided by the bag weight. The table below gives 1–4 tonnes for common bag weights; the values are arithmetic.
| Bag weight (kg) | 1 tonne | 2 tonnes | 3 tonnes | 4 tonnes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 50 | 100 | 150 | 200 |
| 25 | 40 | 80 | 120 | 160 |
| 40 | 25 | 50 | 75 | 100 |
| 50 | 20 | 40 | 60 | 80 |
How many tonnes are 40 bags, and how many kg are 25 bags?
- 40 bags: with 25 kg bags, 40 × 25 = 1,000 kg, or 1 tonne; with 50 kg bags, 2 tonnes.
- 25 bags: with 25 kg bags, 25 × 25 = 625 kg; with 40 kg sacks, 1,000 kg.
- 4 tonnes: 160 bags of 25 kg or 100 sacks of 40 kg.
Firewood and pellets come in different sack weights: our oak firewood sacks are 20–25 kg, sarı meşe (a yellow oak variety) 30 kg, and pine pellets 15 or 20 kg. For tonnes, sacks and steres of firewood see how many bags and steres in a tonne of firewood.
How many hours does a bag of coal burn?
How many hours or weeks a bag lasts depends on the stove, the air setting and the heat loss of the home. To measure it, note the date you open each bag: if a 25 kg bag lasts half a week, you burn 50 kg a week. Burn time is covered in how long stove coal burns, and seasonal needs in how much coal should I buy and our fuel calculator.
Why should you not burn a coal bag?
An empty coal bag is plastic, and plastic does not belong in a stove. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists plastic and household trash among materials that can release toxic or harmful chemicals when burned and may damage your appliance. EPA’s page on backyard burning notes that burning trash produces significant quantities of dioxins, along with particle pollution and carbon monoxide. MIT engineers are blunt: plastic cannot be burned safely in a domestic fireplace; it releases hydrochloric acid, sulfur dioxide, dioxins and furans. Fold empty bags and put them out with plastic waste.
What information will the bag carry?
Under Türkiye’s Regulation on the Control of Solid Fuels, published in the Official Gazette on 16 September 2026, heating-fuel bags will show the Certificate of Conformity and fuel properties or carry a QR code, and the bag colour will depend on the fuel (for example green for imported coal, grey for domestic coal for rural areas, white for coal distributed free). These provisions take effect on 1 June 2028. How to read calorific value, ash and moisture on the bag is explained in the values on a coal bag.
What does it depend on?
- Product: 25 kg for our heating coals, 40 kg for coke-type coal.
- Seller: bag weight can vary by seller; check the product page.
- Fuel type: firewood and pellet sacks weigh differently from coal bags.
- Tonne or bag purchase: bags per tonne = 1,000 ÷ bag weight.
- Moisture: part of the weight of wet coal is water; store bags somewhere dry.
What should I watch for safety?
No fuel is smokeless; a coal stove can produce carbon monoxide, and burning plastic bags adds smoke and toxic gases. Türkiye’s Ministry of Health describes carbon monoxide as colourless and odourless; with headache, dizziness or weakness, ventilate the room and call 112.
