How to Identify Quality Coal? (Domestic vs Imported)

Coal selection is one of the biggest factors affecting both your heating budget and the lifespan of your stove or boiler. Here is how to tell quality coal from low-grade alternatives.

1. Check the Calorific Value

Coal's heat output is measured in kcal/kg. Imported Siberian anthracite typically delivers 7,500–8,200 kcal/kg, making it the most efficient option. Domestic Soma coal ranges from 4,200–4,800 kcal/kg and is a more budget-friendly choice. Lower calorific value means faster burn and higher consumption.

2. Look at the Ash Content

High ash content (above 10%) reduces combustion efficiency and means more frequent cleaning. Premium imported coal generally has an ash rate of 5–8%.

3. Check Moisture Levels

High moisture coal produces less heat and causes tar build-up in chimneys. Certified coal should have moisture below 10%. Visually, good coal looks shiny and hard.

4. Test the Burn Time

Quality anthracite burns slowly and steadily for hours with a bluish-green flame and minimal smoke. Low-grade coal burns quickly, produces excessive smoke, and dies out fast.

5. Domestic vs Imported: Which to Choose?

This depends on your budget and boiler type. Imported Siberian anthracite excels in calorific value, low ash, long burn, and clean combustion. Domestic Soma coal offers better price-to-performance and is widely used in central heating systems.

Always ask for an invoice and request documented calorific values. When in doubt, have the coal tested at an accredited laboratory.
