Winters in Bodrum, Fethiye and Marmaris are short and mild, but in stone-walled villas and seaside homes the damp, windy evenings make a fireplace hard to do without. Here the fireplace is rarely the only heat source; it is lit at weekends and on cold evenings. So choosing the right wood is less about “which gives the most heat” and more about little smoke, few sparks and easy lighting.
Do a Fireplace and a Stove Need the Same Wood?
Not quite. In an open fireplace the fire shares the room's air: sparks can jump onto a rug or sofa, and if smoke spills back it goes straight into the living room. Dry, clean-burning wood that throws few sparks matters most here. In a closed fireplace insert or a stove the fire sits behind glass; what you want is a long-lasting bed of embers so you refuel less often.
Pine is the clearest example of the difference: it lights quickly, but its resin makes it spark and leaves more soot in the chimney. In an open fireplace it should be kindling only, not the main fuel.
Why Dry Oak?
Oak is a dense hardwood; it burns slowly and steadily and holds its embers for a long time. If you want a fire lit in the evening to keep giving warmth late into the night, oak is the safest choice. The condition is dryness: oak that is not dry enough is hard to light, smokes, and spends part of its heat boiling off its own water. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wood burns best at a moisture content below 20 percent, which you can check yourself with an inexpensive moisture meter.
You can compare our oak varieties on the oak firewood page. For long-lasting embers, the densest variety, yellow oak firewood, stands out.

Wood species: 100% oak · Moisture content: 15% - 20% (dry)

Wood species: 100% yellow oak · Bag weight: 30 kg
When Is Beech Better?
If you light an open fireplace in the living room and want no smell or smoke in the room, beech is an excellent option. Well-dried beech burns cleanly, throws few sparks and lights a little more easily than oak; it burns somewhat faster than oak. A practical combination is to start the fire with beech and feed it with oak. Product details are on our beech firewood page.
Fireplace Briquettes
Fireplace briquettes are generally made by compressing wood residues such as sawdust into neat pieces of uniform size. The practical side of such products is that they take up little space and stack tidily, which helps in flats and villas with limited storage. We have not yet published the technical details of our own briquette product; message us on WhatsApp with any questions.
How to Store Firewood in Coastal Humidity
The most common mistake by the sea is piling wood in a closed, airless store or directly on the ground. Wood you bought dry will take moisture back up in a damp place. The EPA's basic rules apply on the coast too:
- Keep the wood off the ground; a pallet or two planks will do.
- Cover only the top; leave the sides open so air can circulate. Covering the sides traps the moisture inside.
- Choose a sheltered, airy corner rather than a wall facing the sea and the prevailing wind.
- Bring a day or two's supply indoors before burning; surface moisture dries at room temperature.
Planning Orders for Villas
For villas and holiday homes, the delivery point matters as much as the wood itself. When ordering, tell us whether the vehicle can reach the gate, whether the wood should be left in the garden or the garage, and who will be at the house at delivery. At addresses with steps or narrow streets, bagged wood is easier to carry and stack than loose wood; at houses with a large garden and room to stack, loose wood can be more practical.
If you only light the fireplace at weekends, you do not have to buy the whole season at once. On your first order, note how many bags you burn in a weekend and size the next order accordingly. For a rough seasonal estimate, see our article how much fuel should I buy.
Delivery to Muğla
We deliver to the door with our own vehicles across İzmir and the surrounding provinces, including Aydın and Muğla; beyond that area we ship by cargo, paid by the buyer. For local details see our Bodrum, firewood delivery in Fethiye and firewood delivery in Marmaris pages. If you are a hotel, restaurant or housing estate planning regular purchases, you can request a quote on our institutional supply page.
