Beware of Stove Poisoning: Life Saving Measures

Every winter in Turkey, many lives are lost due to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from stoves and gas appliances. CO is colourless, odourless, and tasteless — it can poison you without warning. Take these steps to protect your family:

1. Inspect the Flue Every Season

A blocked or damaged flue traps CO inside instead of venting it outside. Before the heating season starts, have a qualified chimney sweep clean and inspect your flue.

2. Never Run a Stove in a Sealed Room

Operating a stove or fireplace without adequate ventilation can be lethal. Always leave a door or window slightly open to ensure oxygen supply; never completely seal the room.

3. Install a CO Detector

Carbon monoxide detectors are inexpensive — a small price for life safety. Install one in every room with a stove or boiler, and near sleeping areas. Replace the battery annually.

4. Extinguish or Reduce the Stove Before Sleeping

Most CO fatalities occur at night when poisoning goes unnoticed. Before bed, extinguish or turn down the stove fully, and leave a window slightly open for ventilation.

5. Know the Symptoms

Headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue are the early signs of CO poisoning. If you experience these symptoms, immediately get to fresh air and call emergency services (112). Turn off the stove and open all windows and doors.
