Winter 2026: What Actually Drives Coal and Firewood Prices?

Every September we get the same question: “How much will coal cost this winter?” The honest answer is that there is no single figure. The price of heating fuel depends on the product type, its calorific value, its moisture content, the delivery distance, whether you buy bulk or bagged, and the month you place the order. Instead of quoting a number that goes stale within weeks, this article explains what drives the price, so you can judge for yourself whether an offer is reasonable or inflated.

1. Calorific Value: You Are Buying Heat, Not Weight

When you buy fuel you are really buying heat. That is why comparing the bag price of two products is misleading; what matters is the cost per unit of heat delivered.

Imported anthracite has a high calorific value: it produces the same warmth from less fuel and burns longer. Domestic lignite has a lower calorific value and therefore a lower bag price — but you burn more bags across the season. The cheaper-looking product can end up costing more by March. The right comparison is: “How many tonnes will get me through the winter, and what is the total?”

2. Imported or Domestic?

The price of imported coal is not set by the coal alone. Exchange rates, port and customs costs, international freight and global supply and demand all feed into it. When any one of those moves, the price of imported coal moves with it.

Domestic lignite and coke are calmer: the price is largely a function of pit costs and domestic haulage. As a result imported products tend to be more volatile during the season. If you want a predictable budget, domestic fuels are steadier; if efficiency and comfort come first, imported coal stands out.

3. Moisture: Paying for Water Without Realising It

Moisture is the most overlooked item in any price comparison. In a wet or under-seasoned product, part of the weight you pay for is water. Worse, that water consumes some of the heat your stove produces as it evaporates. You pay for the water twice: once at purchase, once at the stove.

The effect is dramatic with firewood: freshly cut wood has a very high moisture content and delivers far less usable heat than properly seasoned wood. In coal, moisture lowers the calorific value and makes lighting harder. If one quote is noticeably cheaper than the rest, the first question is not about price — it is about moisture content and seasoning time.

4. Transport Distance and Delivery Conditions

Heating fuel is heavy, and haulage is a real component of the final price. Delivering to central Ödemiş is not the same as delivering to a remote village. Several other conditions change the cost too:

Whether the truck can reach your door, which floor the delivery goes to, whether porters are needed, whether there is a suitable area for a bulk drop, and how much you order at once. This is why a “per tonne price” quoted over the phone can differ from the total that arrives at your door. Always ask for a delivered price including transport. 5. Bulk or Bagged?

Bagged fuel is easier to carry, stack and measure, which makes it ideal for apartments, small stores and short carries. But bagging is labour, and labour raises the unit cost.

Buying in bulk is usually cheaper per unit — provided you have somewhere to tip it and somewhere dry to keep it. For detached houses with a garden, garage or coal store, bulk makes sense. Base the decision not only on unit price but on whether you can keep the fuel dry; bulk fuel that gets wet quickly erases the saving.

6. The Seasonal Demand Curve: Why September Is Cheaper

Demand for heating fuel is not spread evenly across the year. In September and October stocks are fresh, warehouses are full and delivery schedules are relaxed. The moment the weather turns in November, demand spikes — everyone orders in the same fortnight.

This has two consequences. First, delivery times stretch out during the rush; expecting same-day delivery on the first cold day of winter is unrealistic. Second, the well-seasoned, higher-grade stock sells out first, leaving a narrower choice behind. Buying early keeps both your choice and your delivery flexibility.

There is a seasoning bonus too: wood bought in September and stacked in your own store with airflow keeps drying until you start burning it in November. That is money straight back in your pocket.
